Thank You, Patrons, For a Sleigh Full of Holiday Cheer https://www.bapl.org/thank-you-patrons-for-a-sleigh-full-of-holiday-cheer/ Tue, 14 Dec 2021 21:52:17 +0000 https://www.bapl.org/?p=31076 Sonia and Mara, representatives from the Parents as Teachers program, stopped by Monday to fill up their sleigh with holiday cheer – clothing, educational toys, books, and other children’s goodies contributed by generous patrons and library staff.  Lissette Maldonado, P.A.T. Program Supervisor wished to share these words with the library community, “I am so thrilled and grateful with the gifts’ outcome. Thank you so much for your help, effort and support…” All of the donated items will be distributed to 48 children in the P.A.T. Bethlehem program.

Parents as Teachers builds strong communities, thriving families and children who are healthy, safe and ready to learn by matching parents and caregivers with trained professionals who make regular personal home visits during a child’s earliest years in life, from prenatal through kindergarten. In Memory of Lydia Gonzalez Haddad https://www.bapl.org/lydia/ Fri, 17 Sep 2021 17:07:33 +0000 https://www.bapl.org/?p=30131 We were so saddened to hear that Bethlehem Area school district reading specialist Lydia Haddad passed away this month. Throughout her career she was known for the passion she brought to teaching reading to students of the district including those at Donegan Elementary and Freemansburg Elementary School. In lieu of flowers, her family asks that donations be made to the Bethlehem Area Public Library in her name. The funds will be used to purchase library books for children, specifically to support our South Side Branch with titles for kids that share a positive message of diversity, inclusion, and multiculturalism. Contact jberk@bapl.org with questions.

Try something New in 2021 with the Toni Morrison Book Club! https://www.bapl.org/try-something-new-in-2021-with-the-toni-morrison-book-club/ Mon, 05 Apr 2021 14:20:26 +0000 https://www.bapl.org/?p=28303 Join the conversation about one of America’s most important novelists. The series is a collaboration between BAPL and Lehigh University. Moderators are Stephanie Powell Watts, Jasmine Woodson, Stacie Brennan, and Rayah Levy, Head of Adult Services at BAPL. Levy notes that despite being works of fiction, Morrison’s works powerfully represent the voices of the voiceless. Of the year-long book club she says: “Even though I have read some of Toni Morrison’s books before, the experience of complete submersion has been a renaissance, a rediscovery of a woman that is now imprinted in my psyche.”

It is a year-long series, so there are plenty of opportunities to get involved.

The series next meets on April 29 with Song of Solomon, Morrison’s third published novel. The club will meet online from 6:30-8:00. For more information and to book a spot, visit www.bapl.org/events/toni-morrison-book-club-3

BAPL Partners with Lehigh Valley Reads for the Million Minute Challenge in March https://www.bapl.org/bapl-partners-with-lehigh-valley-reads-for-the-million-minute-challenge-in-march/ Wed, 10 Feb 2021 20:45:58 +0000 https://www.bapl.org/?p=27827

The Bethlehem Area Public Library is proud to partner with Lehigh Valley Reads for its Million Minute Challenge beginning in March.  And no, you do NOT have to read a million minutes (because that would take, like a REALLY long time)! But you CAN help us build a community of readers to make the Lehigh Valley a place of opportunity for all.

It’s free, easy to join and all ages can participate. Gather friends, family and peers to read one million minutes with you. You can read anywhere – on lunch breaks, in waiting rooms, before you fall asleep or when you’ve finished your homework. And, you can read anything – comic books, poems, novels or online articles.

How to participate:

  • Register yourself, your office, your book club, or as a whole family on the Million Minute Challenge link on our Youth Services home page or visit Lehigh Valley Reads .
  • Hold a friendly competition between your coworkers, friends or classmates to see who can read the most minutes.
  • Visit BAPL online or in person to find awesome books to read for the challenge!

LVReads is an initiative of both the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley and Lehigh Valley Public Media, home of PBS39.
