Attendees painted gardening pots, toured the park’s garden while learning about permaculture, and ended the night by planting seeds provided by our seed library in their personalized pots.

The Park describes permaculture as “a holistic design philosophy that mimics relationships found in nature and has been used for thousands of years to create living, sustainable, regenerative systems.” The park coordinators taught us all about plants that grow better together or apart, how to prevent deer and other animals from eating plants, what materials are best for compost, how to best make use of a small space, and more!

The South Side Permaculture Park “strives to restore soil, create healthy root systems, and ultimately grow more nutritious food in urban areas for the people who need it most.” One of their upcoming projects is to build a tool shed out of the most natural, sustainable materials.

You can learn more about the park, including how to harvest your own produce from their garden, here.

The Bethlehem Area Public Library South Side Branch’s adult summer reading program began on June 11th and ends on August 13th. Adults that attend any virtual or in-person programs held by the South Side Branch during this time will be entered into a raffle to win a gift card from South Side businesses.

We also have plenty of take-home activities that you can pick up at the South Side Branch or download on our website. Submitting these completed activities will enter you in the raffle as well. Check out our upcoming programs here!

Thank You, Patrons, For a Sleigh Full of Holiday Cheer https://www.bapl.org/thank-you-patrons-for-a-sleigh-full-of-holiday-cheer/ Tue, 14 Dec 2021 21:52:17 +0000 https://www.bapl.org/?p=31076 Sonia and Mara, representatives from the Parents as Teachers program, stopped by Monday to fill up their sleigh with holiday cheer – clothing, educational toys, books, and other children’s goodies contributed by generous patrons and library staff.  Lissette Maldonado, P.A.T. Program Supervisor wished to share these words with the library community, “I am so thrilled and grateful with the gifts’ outcome. Thank you so much for your help, effort and support…” All of the donated items will be distributed to 48 children in the P.A.T. Bethlehem program.

Parents as Teachers builds strong communities, thriving families and children who are healthy, safe and ready to learn by matching parents and caregivers with trained professionals who make regular personal home visits during a child’s earliest years in life, from prenatal through kindergarten. BAPL has been on the road quite a bit, in addition to the events and programs at our own buildings. We’ve met a lot of people, shared a lot of stories, and took a lot of pictures. Check them out below and here’s to a happy 2022!

New BAPL Series Imagine Your Way Around Town https://www.bapl.org/new-bapl-series-imagine-your-way-around-town/ Sat, 27 Jun 2020 20:10:28 +0000 https://www.bapl.org/?p=25622 Summer is finally here, and the green go ahead of eased quarantine restrictions beckon many of us to tentatively step out to curbside cafes and open shop doors – those same small businesses financially impacted by the pandemic in the past months. In an effort to support the small business community and introduce an eclectic mix of careers to students as they consider their educational paths, librarian Regina Kochmaruk reached out to small business owners to partner and create a new video series called Imagine Your Way Around Town. With on-site visits and fun interviews, we hear stories of good work, favorite career moments, challenges, and interesting – and often circuitous – professional journeys. A new video will be posted each Sunday on the BAPL YouTube channel beginning June 28th. After a harrowing and turbulent spring, let’s rekindle community connections and meet some of the wonderful people in our neighborhoods!

Coming Soon: Books on the Hill https://www.bapl.org/coming-soon-books-on-the-hill/ Mon, 14 Oct 2019 15:35:03 +0000 https://www.bapl.org/?p=23294 The Bethlehem Area Public Library is bringing a new library service to Fountain Hill. We purchased a used, no longer road-ready bookmobile and are turning it into a mini-branch to be located right next to the pool at the corner of Spiegel Street and Stanley Avenue. We are calling it Books on the Hill. Books on the Hill will be staffed by a BAPL librarian (hours to be determined). There will be a rotating collection of books and other library materials as well as free WiFi. Reserve items may be sent to this location from the Main Library for ease of pick-up.

Acclaimed children’s book author/illustrator Zachariah Ohara has been hired to create original art for the exterior of the vehicle. It’s going to look so great!! We expect  this new service to be available by the end of this year, exact date to be determined.

“The Next Chapter” — Senior Storytime at YWMCA’s Adult Day Center https://www.bapl.org/the-next-chapter-senior-storytime-at-ywmcas-adult-day-center/ Sun, 10 Mar 2019 13:25:25 +0000 https://www.bapl.org/?p=21002 Participants in the YWCA’s Adult Day Center Program continue to enjoy BAPL Outreach’s senior storytime, “The Next Chapter.”  The program is simple — an appropriately meaningful story is shared and complimentary activities follow. In January, participants learned the story of the Golden Gate Bridge in Pop’s Bridge and were then introduced to a variety of STEM building toys.  Playing with such toys can be beneficial in aiding fine motor coordination and problem solving – skills that are affected in those suffering from dementia.

In February, participants were delighted with the story of artist Katya Arnold and her real life work of teaching elephants to paint through her elephant conservation project.  After hearing the book Elephants Can Paint Too!, participants were invited to create their own floral paintings – just like the elephants did!

BAPL visits KidsCare https://www.bapl.org/bapl-visits-kidscare/ Wed, 27 Feb 2019 14:24:27 +0000 https://www.bapl.org/?p=20999 Anytime and anywhere — even the doctor’s office is a great place for spreading stories (not germs)!  Because primary care physicians have repeated contact with families from an early stage, they play a significant role in promoting literacy.  BAPL Outreach recently visited Star Wellness KidsCare on the South Side of Bethlehem to read a few stories, chat with the kiddos, and share with parents the importance of reading aloud to their children. Even waiting rooms can elicit a fit of giggles with The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
