BAPL Partners with Lehigh Valley Reads for the Million Minute Challenge in March https://www.bapl.org/bapl-partners-with-lehigh-valley-reads-for-the-million-minute-challenge-in-march/ Wed, 10 Feb 2021 20:45:58 +0000 https://www.bapl.org/?p=27827

The Bethlehem Area Public Library is proud to partner with Lehigh Valley Reads for its Million Minute Challenge beginning in March.  And no, you do NOT have to read a million minutes (because that would take, like a REALLY long time)! But you CAN help us build a community of readers to make the Lehigh Valley a place of opportunity for all.

It’s free, easy to join and all ages can participate. Gather friends, family and peers to read one million minutes with you. You can read anywhere – on lunch breaks, in waiting rooms, before you fall asleep or when you’ve finished your homework. And, you can read anything – comic books, poems, novels or online articles.

How to participate:

  • Register yourself, your office, your book club, or as a whole family on the Million Minute Challenge link on our Youth Services home page or visit Lehigh Valley Reads .
  • Hold a friendly competition between your coworkers, friends or classmates to see who can read the most minutes.
  • Visit BAPL online or in person to find awesome books to read for the challenge!

LVReads is an initiative of both the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley and Lehigh Valley Public Media, home of PBS39.

South Side Branch of Bethlehem Area Public Library to Host “Silver Scream” Halloween Benefit https://www.bapl.org/south-side-branch-of-bethlehem-area-public-library-to-host-silver-scream-halloween-benefit/ Tue, 03 Sep 2019 19:55:15 +0000 https://www.bapl.org/?p=22956 The Bethlehem Area Public Library (BAPL) is hosting a benefit bash this year at the South Side Branch (400 Webster Street) on Saturday, October 26, 2019 from 7 pm to 10 pm. SILVER SCREAM AT THE SOUTH SIDE, inspired by classic Hollywood horror, is an adults-only Halloween party featuring treats and live tunes, cocktails, a raffle, a costume contest–and some spooky surprises.

All proceeds from ticket sales and sponsorships will go toward installing an elevator at the historic South Side Branch, making the Branch’s fantastic slate of programs for children and adults accessible for all. Currently, programs are held in the basement of the almost 90 year-old building, which is inaccessible for strollers, wheelchairs, walkers, and anyone with limited mobility. In order for the South Side Branch to be a truly inclusive place for all, an elevator is a necessary update.

The event has already been generously sponsored by the Friends of the Library, as well as Merchants Bank and the Fraternal Order of Police Star Lodge #20, representing the men and women of the Bethlehem Police Department. The West Philadelphia Foot Tappers will liven up the party with jazz and ‘30s swing.

“Halloween is a time where people can dress up, party, and laugh at what they are afraid of,” says South Side Branch Adult Services Technician Janine Santoro. “SILVER SCREAM will be an event where community members can do all of these things, while knowing they are contributing to a great cause that they will all be able to benefit from.”

And “librarians,” says Executive Director Josh Berk, “know how to party.”

For more information about attending the event or to become a sponsor, email jberk@bapl.org or kracculia@bapl.org.
